IV (intravenous) vitamin C, more appropriately called ascorbic acid, is a high-concentration infusion of the water-soluble antioxidant directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the tight gastrointestinal controls that normally limit absorption. When administered intravenously, ascorbic acid reaches plasma concentrations up to 50–100 times higher than what is achievable through oral intake. At these pharmacologic levels, the molecule undergoes rapid redox cycling, donating electrons to neutralize reactive oxygen species while simultaneously generating controlled amounts of hydrogen peroxide in the extracellular space—a process that selectively stresses abnormal or infected cells while healthy cells detoxify the peroxide via catalase and glutathione pathways. The infusion itself enters through a peripheral or central venous catheter, where it immediately disperses into systemic circulation, is filtered by the kidneys, and participates in enzymatic reactions critical to collagen synthesis, immune-cell function, neurotransmitter production, and metabolic regulation. Hemodynamic monitoring is often performed during administration to observe for rare adverse reactions such as osmotic shifts, hemolysis in G6PD-deficient individuals, or electrolyte imbalances due to the high osmolality of concentrated ascorbate solutions.
